Military Funeral Honors Honoring Those Who Served Mission Statement: The Military Funeral Honors Program will render professional and dignified, service traditional funeral honors, to all eligible service members, retirees, and veterans. Request Funeral Honors Services: If you wish to request Military Funeral Honors please notify your Funeral Director or contact the Rhode Island Army National Guard’s Military funeral Honors Program. Obtain a DD214: Contact the National Personnel Records Center, https://www.archives.gov/veterans or call the RI Army National Guard’s Military Funeral Honors Office at (401) 275-4160. Commitment: Honoring those who served is our commitment to recognize the sacrifice and contributions of our nation's veterans. Funeral Honors Provided: A Military Funeral Honors detail of three or more Uniformed Military Personnel, a Three Soldier Firing Party, playing "Taps" either by a live bugler or high-quality recording and folding and presenting the U.S. flag.   • How do I go about getting Honors?

    Always go through your Funeral Director. The Funeral Director will contact the appropriate Service

  • Where can I get a copy of my loved ones DD214?

    If they joined the military in Rhode Island (after 1975) you can call

    The Rhode Island Veterans Home at (401) 253-8000 (Any Branch of the Service).

    You can contact the contact the National Personnel Records Center at https://www.archives.gov/veterans

  • Where do I get a flag?

    The Funeral Director will get the flag for you. If you are not using a Funeral Home, you can take the Soldiers DD214 and the death certificate to the United States Post Office and they will provide one.

  • How much does a Military Funeral Cost?

    Nothing – You cannot be charged for the service, that’s the law.

  • Who is entitled to Military Funeral Honors?

    Anyone who completed their first term of service and received an Honorable Discharge.

     

    Active Duty, Reserve, and National Guard members are entitled to at least a three Soldier detail to Fire a nine round Rifle Volley, play TAPS, Fold the Flag and present the flag to the next of kin.
